Organized by the École française d’Athènes, the Laboratory for Anthropological Research – Panteion University, and the Institut français de Grèce, this Spring School aims to contribute to the examination of the history and memory of the Cold War from a perspective that takes into account the sound, and therefore sensory, dimensions of its experience. Starting from the concept of soundscape, including voice, radio, and mediated sound, the Spring School will focus on voice and politics, radio archives, radio broadcasts, Cold War history and anthropology of socialism and postsocialism. Combining theoretical lectures and practical workshops we propose to look into different modes of listening and sound technology, explore the construction of auditory experience within a particular social and historical setting and contribute to our understanding of how sound is implicated in control, discipline and ideology formation. We also aim to combine subjects such as soundscapes, radio voice, voice politics, sound memories, mediated sound with artistic approaches based on sound and with multimodal ethnography. This will allow the participants to create and present their own sound-related collaborative projects and will feature workshops and art presentations by artists and renowned scholars. These themes will be worked both theoretically and practically through the following lectures and workshops:

Lectures

  1. Modern Listening, Voice and Politics
  2. Memories of Migration through Sound
  3. Working with Radio Archives
  4. Multimodal Ethnography
  5. Eastern Europe through Radio Free Europe
  6. (Re)composing and narrating soundscapes

Workshops

  1. Ethnographic Sound Writing
  2. Doing Podcasts
  3. Mapping Soundscapes
