Le colloque Le Laboratoire ethnographique est organisé par l’École française d’Athènes, le Musée Benaki et le Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies avec pour objectif d’explorer les liens entre archéologie, ethnologie et création artistique, tels qu’ils se sont tissés à Paris dans l’entre-deux-guerres autour de la question de l’objet.
Ce colloque est associé à l’exposition Objets en question, archéologie, ethnologie, avant-garde présentée au musée du quai Branly, du 11 février au 22 juin 2025. Celle-ci revient sur le moment privilégié de l’entre-deux-guerres, où, à Paris, l’avant-garde artistique – et plus particulièrement les surréalistes – réinvente la notion d’objet, qu’elle manipule ou parodie dans ses créations.
Durant cette période, l’arrivée de nombreux objets en provenance d’Amérique, d’Afrique, d’Océanie et d’Asie, et leur prise en compte, tant sur le plan esthétique que documentaire, s’accompagnent d’une remise en question de la supériorité de l’art grec classique, érigé jusqu’alors en idéal du beau. L’intérêt renouvelé pour la Grèce préclassique, soutenu par de nombreuses fouilles et découvertes (art cycladique, art minoen, art archaïque, etc.), déplace l’idée du « grec » vers un passé plus ancien, qui rejoint, par ses valeurs et son esthétique, les objets ethnographiques. L’avant-garde artistique s’empare alors de cette nouvelle Grèce préclassique. Le monde grec et les mondes «exotiques» deviennent l’une des sources d’une esthétique radicalement nouvelle.
Le colloque Le laboratoire ethnographique entend précisément mettre en lumière ce tournant décisif. Il s’agit d’explorer ce changement de paradigme, ce phénomène de triangulation fertile et dynamique qui se met alors en place, dont les pointes seraient l’archéologie, l’ethnographie et l’art moderne.
Douze chercheurs internationaux, archéologues, ethnologues et historiens de l’art participent à ce débat, organisé en quatre constellations qui correspondent à la structure même de l’exposition.

The international conference The Ethnographic Laboratory is organized by the École française d’Athènes, the Benaki Museum and the Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies in Athens. Its aim is to explore the connections between archaeology, ethnology, and artistic creation, as they developed in Paris during the interwar period around the question of the object.
The conference is linked to the exhibition Objects – Ways of Seeing. Archaeology, Ethnology, Avant-garde, presented at the musée du quai Branly from February 11 to June 22, 2025. The exhibition revisits this privileged moment of the interwar years when, in Paris, the artistic avant-garde—particularly the Surrealists—reinvented the notion of the object, which they manipulated or parodied in their creations. During this period, the arrival of numerous objects from the Americas, Africa, Oceania, and Asia—and their consideration both as aesthetic and documentary materials— were accompanied by a questioning of the superiority of classical Greek art taken as the ideal reference for beauty. The renewed interest in preclassical Greece, supported by numerous excavations and discoveries (Cycladic art, Minoan art, archaic art, etc.), shifted the idea of “Greek” to a more distant past, which joined, in its values and aesthetics, ethnographic objects. The artistic avant-garde seized upon this new preclassical Greece. The Greek world and “exotic” worlds became one of the sources of a radically new aesthetic.
The conference The Ethnographic Laboratory intends to address this paradigm shift and investigate the phenomenon of fertile and dynamic triangulation between archaeology, ethnography and modern art, which was then defining the cultural field.
Twelve international scholars—archaeologists, ethnologists, and art historians—will take part in this discussion, which will follow four thematic constellations, reflecting the structure of the exhibition itself.

Το συνέδριο Το εθνογραφικό εργαστήριο διοργανώνεται από την Γαλλική Σχολή Αθηνών, το Μουσείο Μπενάκη και το Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies στην Αθήνα από τις 22 έως τις 24 Μαΐου.
Στόχος του συνεδρίου είναι να διερευνήσει τους δεσμούς μεταξύ αρχαιολογίας, εθνολογίας και καλλιτεχνικής πρωτοπορίας, όπως διαμορφώθηκαν στο Παρίσι κατά την περίοδο του μεσοπολέμου γύρω από το κρίσιμο ερώτημα του καλλιτεχνικού αντικειμένου και της σημασίας του.
Το συνέδριο συνδέεται με την έκθεση που πραγματοποιείται στο Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac στο Παρίσι από τις 11 Φεβρουαρίου έως τις 22 Ιουνίου 2025. Η έκθεση επιστρέφει στην περίοδο του μεσοπολέμου, όταν στο Παρίσι η καλλιτεχνική πρωτοπορία, και ειδικότερα οι σουρεαλιστές, επανεφηύραν την έννοια του αντικειμένου. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου, η άφιξη τεχνουργημάτων από την Αμερική, την Αφρική, την Ωκεανία και την Ασία και η επανεκτίμησή τους τόσο για την αισθητική όσο και για την τεκμηριωτική τους αξία ήταν ταυτόχρονη με την αμφισβήτηση της υπεροχής της κλασικής ελληνικής τέχνης. Το ανανεωμένο ενδιαφέρον για την προκλασική Ελλάδα, υποστηριζόμενο από πολυάριθμες ανασκαφές και ευρήματα κυκλαδικής, μινωικής, αρχαϊκής τέχνης κ.λπ., μετατόπισε την ιδέα του «ελληνικού» σε ένα πιο μακρινό παρελθόν, το οποίο συνδέεται σε επίπεδο αισθητικής με το εθνογραφικό αντικείμενο. Η καλλιτεχνική πρωτοπορία οικειοποιήθηκε αυτήν τη νέα προκλασική Ελλάδα. Ο ελληνικός κόσμος και οι «εξωτικοί» κόσμοι έγιναν από κοινού μία από τις πηγές μιας ριζικά καινοτόμου καλλιτεχνικής πρακτικής.
Το συμπόσιο Το Εθνογραφικό Εργαστήριο σκοπεύει να αναδείξει ακριβώς αυτό το αποφασιστικό σημείο καμπής για την τροπή που πήραν ο πολιτισμός και η τέχνη, συγκεράζοντας στοιχεία από τις επιστήμες της αρχαιολογίας, της εθνογραφίας και της μοντέρνας τέχνης.
Δώδεκα ερευνητές, αρχαιολόγοι, ανθρωπολόγοι και ιστορικοί τέχνης από διάφορες χώρες θα συμμετάσχουν σε αυτήν τη συζήτηση, που θα οργανωθεί σε τέσσερις θεματικούς «αστερισμούς», που αντιστοιχούν στην ίδια τη δομή της έκθεσης.
