Synopsis
Que sait-on de la démocratie athénienne antique, l’ancêtre des démocraties modernes ? Pourquoi cette forme de gouvernance inédite est-elle née à Athènes, il y a 2500 ans ? Depuis un siècle et demi, archéologues et historiens enquêtent sur cette période cruciale qui voit, pour la première fois dans l’histoire, émerger un régime politique où les décisions étaient prises par le peuple, et non plus par une élite aristocratique. Pour se protéger de la corruption, de la guerre civile et de la tyrannie, les Athéniens avaient imaginé des solutions que les chercheurs reconstituent grâce à des projets d’archéologie expérimentale. Mais l’archéologie de la démocratie athénienne révèle aussi des pans sombres de son histoire, comme l’esclavage. Des grandes fouilles archéologiques au pied de l’Acropole, sur le site de l’Agora, aux cimetières qui gardent encore la trace des victimes des guerres civiles, de Sparte à Delphes et au port du Pirée, des mines d’argent qui ont fait la fortune d’Athènes aux navires de guerre de la flotte athénienne, le film explore sur le terrain l’enquête intense qui se poursuit aujourd’hui, et retrace le fonctionnement de cette démocratie antique, soulignant son ingéniosité mais aussi ses limites et fragilités, et des principes qui pourraient être source d’inspiration pour nous aujourd’hui.

Synopsis
2,500 years ago in Athens, a radical political experiment began: for the first time in history, ordinary citizens—not kings or aristocrats—were given the power to govern.
How did this unprecedented system emerge? And how did it actually work?
For more than a century, archaeologists and historians have uncovered the physical traces of this bold democratic experiment. Beneath the Acropolis, excavations of the ancient Agora reveal the civic spaces where citizens gathered to debate and vote. Experimental archaeology is helping researchers reconstruct the ingenious political mechanisms Athenians devised to guard against corruption, tyranny, and civil war.
Yet the archaeology of democracy also reveals its darker foundations. The Athenian system rested on a society shaped by slavery, war, and fierce political rivalries.
From the ruins of the Agora to the silver mines of Laurion that financed the state, and the port of Piraeus that connected Athens to the wider Mediterranean, the film follows archaeologists in the field as they piece together how this remarkable political experiment functioned—and why its legacy still resonates today.
