The Musical Landscape of Smyrna through the Greek Estudiantinas

This lecture explores the musical landscape of Smyrna in the early twentieth century, focusing on the Greek estudiantinas as a central phenomenon of an urban cosmopolitanism that developed within a milieu of multiple cultural references. Drawing on evidence from historical recordings, literature, and the press, it highlights a dynamic field in which musicians drew inspiration from the Spanish tradition of estudiantinas and transformed it into a Greek-speaking soundscape code, grounded in aesthetic intersections stretching from the Mediterranean to the Balkans and Central Europe. Smyrna, as a quintessential site of cultural transformation, functioned as a hub of multiple circulations, where Greek musicians actively contributed to shaping a global musical network. The lecture proposes to view the estudiantinas as carriers of a polymorphic artistic creation, situated in one of the most emblematic locales east of the Aegean, shortly before the Catastrophe of 1922.

Το μουσικό τοπίο της Σμύρνης μέσα από τις ελληνικές εστουδιαντίνες

Η διάλεξη διερευνά το μουσικό τοπίο της Σμύρνης στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα, εστιάζοντας στις ελληνικές εστουδιαντίνες ως κεντρικό φαινόμενο ενός αστικού κοσμοπολιτισμού που αναπτύχθηκε μέσα σε περιβάλλον πολλαπλών πολιτισμικών αναφορών. Μέσα από τεκμήρια της ιστορικής δισκογραφίας, της λογοτεχνίας και του Τύπου, αναδεικνύεται ένα δυναμικό πεδίο, όπου οι μουσικοί αντλούν έμπνευση από την ισπανική παράδοση των estudiantinas και τη μεταπλάθουν σε έναν ελληνοφωνικό ηχοτοπικό κώδικα, βασισμένο σε αισθητικές διασταυρώσεις που εκτείνονται από τη Μεσόγειο έως τα Βαλκάνια και την Κεντρική Ευρώπη. Η Σμύρνη, ως κατεξοχήν τόπος πολιτισμικών ανασχηματισμών, λειτουργεί ως κόμβος πολλαπλών κυκλοφοριών, όπου οι Έλληνες μουσικοί συμμετέχουν ενεργά στη διαμόρφωση ενός παγκόσμιου μουσικού δικτύου. Η διάλεξη προτείνει να δούμε τις εστουδιαντίνες ως φορείς μιας πολυμορφικής καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας, σε έναν από τους πλέον εμβληματικούς τόπους ανατολικά του Αιγαίου, λίγο πριν την Καταστροφή του 1922.
