Between Insularity and Islandness(es): The Contribution of the Byzantine Paradigm

Myrto Veikou Assistant Professor, Department of History-Archaeology, University of Patras
Invitée par Elli-Evangelia Bia École française d’Athènes

The lecture focalizes late antique and medieval notions of insular space in the Eastern Mediterranean, ranging from the physical dimensions of islands and islets (insularity) to their intersubjective spatial experiences (islandness or ileity). The discussion aims to interconnect physical traits, spatial connections and limitations as a result of geography, human dynamics, socio-economic structures, and cultural practices. It is based on archaeological and textual evidence regarding the use of islands by the Byzantines between the 5th and the 15th centuries. The archaeological discussion includes a first and preliminary contextualization of the yet unpublished archaeological site of Doroussa islet, in the Saronic Gulf, which is currently under investigation by the speaker within the Research Project The Little Islandscapes of the Saronic Project (LISP) of the Swedish Institute in Athens.
