The École française d’Athènes and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Serres have begun a programme of archaeological research at the site of Terpni, located about twenty kilometres south of Serres in northern Greece. This settlement, whose ancient name we do not know, is located on the right bank of the Strymon valley, in the hinterland of Amphipolis. It was briefly explored in 1993 by the Greek Archaeological Service, which unearthed several monuments, including a large basilica with 5 naves, which has never been published. The new excavations have shown that the site was occupied from the 8th century BC to the 7th century AD, but research has so far focused on the Late Antique levels. We will present the results of our work in Terpni and its surroundings.
