As part of its training provision, the FSA is able to accommodate students enrolled in a professional training course who are required to complete a 'vocational' traineeship during or after their studies. This provision covers students who have chosen a profession linked to archaeology – topography, restoration, architecture, and drawing – but also specialists in archival science. The duration of the traineeship is of a minimum of one month and varies according to the task assigned to the trainee.
Application requirements
Candidates must be enrolled at a level of studies corresponding to a 'Master 1' or beyond. For traineeships taking place in the field, they must be in adequate physical condition.
Applications
In January the FSA sends a call for applications to the establishments where professionals that it may need in the upcoming year's field seasons are trained.
Applications must include:
- an application form (completed online)
- a CV
- a letter of motivation
- a letter of recommendation from someone in charge of the training in which the candidate is engaged.
Applications are submitted electronically, as attachments to a message sent to secretariat.dir_etudes@efa.gr .
An acknowledgement is sent when this message is received.
Selection of candidates for professional traineeships
Applications are reviewed by the director and his team and the Direction of Studies, in consultation with those organising the academic activities which may accommodate the trainee, and the traineeship supervisor concerned.
Professional traineeship agreement
For all candidates who are accepted, traineeship arrangements are made with the institution of origin. In each case the traineeship takes place under the responsibility of an FSA professional (a restorer, topographical engineer, architect, curator etc.) or, failing that, such a person working on an FSA contract or who is a member of the Greek Ministry of Culture's staff.
A traineeship agreement is signed between the FSA and the training establishment.
Terms of a stay
Professional trainees receive a fixed allowance (on a scale set out below) intended to cover the costs of transport to the site where they are participating, as well as subsistence costs. They receive free accommodation on the sites where they are summoned to work. If there is availability, and if their travel arrangements require them to pass through Athens, they may stay in the guesthouse in Athens: this is chargeable (12 euros or 14 euros per night).
Report / assessment
In the month after their stay in Athens, professional trainees are required to send the Direction of Studies and their traineeship supervisor a report on their activity (10000 characters maximum, including spaces). If necessary, the traineeship supervisor passes the evaluation, in the form demanded by the traineeship agreement, to the FSA's Direction of Studies.
The FSA's Direction of Studies passes the traineeship report and evaluation to the student's institution of origin.
