This first general presentation of a work-in-progress aims to offer a synthetic insight into the wide variety of research topics and disciplinary fields covered by the archive and collection of the Gilliéron artists, legated and entrusted to the École française d’Athènes by their descendant. The research project is double-facetted and related to both the history of Greek archaeology as well as the relationship of the modern Greek state with the discipline of archaeology, focusing both on antiquity and modernity. Having served field archaeology for two generations by handling all kinds of archaeological finds, from miniature to monumental, and having fundamentally developed the domain of representation and replication of archaeological artefacts in Greece, the legacy of three generations of Gilliérons is actually more than relevant.
The annual research residency at the EFA in 2021-22 is funded by CollEx-Persée and is accompanied by an IST specialist in view of the digital valorization of the archive; it offers a transition between two research periods (2017-2021 and 2022-2026) which aim towards a multidisciplinary treatment of the documents and artefacts, as well as the production of new knowledge for research.
