The second preliminary Greek Pottery Workshop falls within the program of the international colloquium project dedicated to the study of 8th and 7th century BC Greek ceramics in Southern Italy and Sicily. This project has the ambition to critically re-examine the current state of our knowlege based on recent research in this field.
To reach this aim, the two preliminary workshops serve the purpose of defining the main methodological issues and selecting appropriate archaeological documentary sources to be presented at the final colloquium. This will be held at Centre Jean Berard de Naples in 2025 and organised by Mario Denti and Jean-Christophe Sourisseau, in collaboration with Lou De Barbarin and Josipa Mandić.
While the first preliminary workshop, held in 2021 at the Ecole française de Rome, gave us the opportunity to spotlight the most recent research on Greek pottery from Southern Italy and Sicily, the second one aims to present the research and the most recent data from East Greece, Aegean Islands, Peloponnese and Attica. In this second preliminary workshop, speakers are invited to present new evidence or re-analyse known archaeological datasets to illuminate aspects of Greek ceramics found in the regions outlined above, with a particular focus on the following themes:

  • Relations and contacts between those regions and Southern Italy and Sicily
  • The political and cultural contexts in which specific stylistic and iconographic choices emerge and are endorsed
  • The circulation of pottery and its role within and beyond the colonies
  • Contexts of production, of consumption and reception
