SemGRAnt- The Need to Order the Past

The Need to Order the Past: Writing History in Hellenistic Cities

Eftychia Stavrianopoulou University of Heidelberg

WEBINAIRE / WEBINAR

Περίληψη / Resume / Résumé

After Alexander’s conquests, all actors – the kings, the poleis of mainland Greece, the newly founded cities and the ancient communities in the conquered territories – needed to (re)position themselves within the newly created oikoumene. In this context, the history and identity of the various communities and their members became particularly important. The veritable explosion of literary works dealing in various ways with local historiography can clearly be seen as a consequence of these efforts, but equally important is the evolution of inscriptions from a medium of information (‘every-day memory’) to a primary medium of social memory. The lecture will explore the complex relationship between inscriptions and social memory through a series of case studies. The role of inscriptions in ordering the historical past through the selection of potentially conflicting accounts, the authority of inscriptions as narrators of the past, and the relationship of inscriptions to other media of social memory such as literature and ritual are some of the issues addressed.
