As Greece was preparing to celebrate the bicentenary of the “Eikosiena Revolution” – the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire starting in 1821 – it was becoming clear that classical antiquity was going to be an integral part of the celebrations. Moreover, as the bicentenary year followed 2020 – when the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Salamis was celebrated – allusions to Greece’s classical heritage became more prominent.
In his talk, Dimitris Plantzos takes account of the year’s celebrations, as well as their accompanying rhetoric, in order to examine the extent to which Greek antiquity keeps exercising its hold over Greek modernity.
