This talk presents a research-creation project on the sonic memories of communism in Bulgaria, through the example of the radiobroadcasting device radiotočka (literally “radio point”). Largely spread after WW2 under the influence of the Soviet Union, this dispositive of monochannel cabled radios illustrates at once the impact and ambivalence of media productions in the context of a totalitarian regime, between propaganda, cultural education and intimate reception. As radiotočka disappears progressively in the 2000s, due to different transformations in technology, societal expectations and mediascape, this research addresses the relationships between ideology and soundscapes, as well as ordinary sonic memories. It takes notably the shape of an audio documentary questioning the alternative ways of scientific writing and the potentialities of research-creation in terms of diffusion and valorization of knowledge.

Programme 2023

The Modern and Contemporary Studies Seminar is a moment of exchange gathering guest speakers and researchers from the programs of the modern and contemporary section, to present their work in connection with the structuring themes of the EFA and the research agenda of the section, as well as with current research on the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. As a meeting point for researchers from different backgrounds, the seminar aims to promote the research carried out at the EFA in modern and contemporary history, anthropology, geography, sociology and art history (and others), but also to disseminate to the School’s community other research carried out by several institutions in the area.
