A discussion with Diana Mishkova about her recent book Rival Byzantiums: Empire and Identity in Southeastern Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2022). The book is a comparative exploration of the way the phenomenon of Byzantium has been treated by the historiographies of the polities that have emerged from its remains – Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania and Turkey – and the way these, often warring, interpretations have been shaping the national canons of history in these countries from the Enlightenment to the present day.
