The 100th anniversary of the destruction of Smyrna’s cosmopolitan character and of the erasing of the Greek-Orthodox communities from Asia Minor invites us to convene a conference on the significance of this large port-city of the Eastern Aegean.
The goal of the conference is to research the cultural, social and economic history of the city in the late Ottoman period as well as the factors that caused the disappearance of cosmopolitanism in the Ottoman Empire and particularly this culturally diverse city, a major hub in Asia Minor and the whole Eastern Mediterranean.
